Sustainable Development Goals Port

Localization of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals)

The UN created the SDGs with universal goals in mind: social inclusion, economic growth, and environmental protection. The localization is about adapting the SDGs to the needs of a specific locality. North Brooklyn has an incredible activist infrastructure and a lot of success with certain neighbourhood issues. Our community board is the epicenter of our local democracy, but with such rapid gentrification and an accelerating amount of issues, it currently takes a more reactionary rather than an intentional approach to planning. By applying the SDGs to the CB1 community board District Needs Report, we can foster more planning, collaboration, transparency…share best practices, challenges, innovations… stop duplication of work in the community, collect better data with more representation, and be more equitable and inclusive.

We have created a working group comprised of NCNW board members, UN foundation staff, scholars from Pratt institute, community board members and community leaders. Pratt Institute is developing an Interactive Installation in North Brooklyn to educate people about the SDGs and using the issue of violence against women to exhibit how this model can improve a serious neighborhood problem. You can interact with the Installation which will be located on the side of the Neighborhood Women building this spring!
